One great thing about living in the 21st century is, a lot of things happen which were absolutely unpredictable only a decade ago. Most of my friends work in professions that did not even exist when we graduated. Others take it one step further and write books or create mobile apps that either revolve around very old or – as in the example today – very young people.
nubie* is an app for the rather young ones among us. Or to be more precise: their parents. My friends Katrin and Björn – a couple which professionally forms the Bergdorf Studios – launched this wonderful little app a couple of weeks ago. Both of them look back on a long career in online marketing. And after becoming parents of little Ella, they have found a perfect niche for their application: documenting how your little one grows up.
Hi Katrin, hi Björn. What is nubie*?
nubie* is a baby diary app for parents who keep thinking „I need to remember this and write down later“ – but never do so. It allows you to collect photos, videos, personal thoughts, quotes & milestones of your baby in just one place. You can share all unique moments on the go via Facebook or e-mail – or send a postcard with a printed photo directly from within the app.
It’s probably not just a social network for parents…or baby photos, right?
When our daughter Ella was born we felt that Social Networks or Photo Communities weren’t the right place to document our child’s 
development mainly due to privacy reasons. But of course we still wanted to share our excitement with friends & family and had nothing against the occasional Facebook post.
A couple of months we tried to keep record of our child‘s development with a baby journal that we got as a present for Ella’s birth. But we failed badly. First of all because it didn‘t fit with all the pictures, video clips etc. we were collecting. And secondly due to the fact that we simply couldn‘t find the time to keep it up-to-date and frequently completely forgot about it.
Another thing that was new to our lives as parents: we started to spend quite some time queuing at the photo printer at our local chemist shop. Grandparents can be pretty demanding when it comes to showing off their grandchildren’s achievements. And that‘s where the idea came from in the first place.
How did you get to the point to turn an idea into an actual project?
The first year we only talked about it. And when we still couldn‘t find a suitable solution for our demand after 12 months time we started to put a concept to paper. Since the idea is pretty straight-forward we were positive it could easily be done in our spare time (which turned out to be super-naive).
What did you learn as parents running a startup project? Both of you worked in agencies for a long time? What distinguishes the two types of work (startup vs agency?)
I think the biggest difference is that you are involved in and responsible for each and every detail of your product development. Which I actually feel is one of the best things about it since it is a great source of motivation.
But at the same time it can also be a little cumbersome. The way I see it agencies should strive to enable their employees to act like start-up entrepreneurs as often as possible. There‘s nothing more propulsive than taking risk and responsibility.
What does the future evolution of nubie* look like?
In the near future we are planning to extent the app-to-print features. One of the upcoming print products will be a photo book, since this is very popular among parents for their baby‘s first birthday. And of course we have a long list of app features that we would like to include as soon as possible, e.g. a possibility to include another child etc. Besides that we are also open to co-operation requests that enable us to further evolve nubie* as a diary for other content, it would certainly also make a great holiday journal for instance.
